But she makes a good point on “Offensive” comedy, basically saying, where would we be if we couldn’t laugh.

I’m my a fan of her E work, but she was absolutely a trail blazer. In her prime she was standing toe to toe with Carlin and others of that era. Heck, she almost got the Tonght Show. If you want to listen to something interesting go find her Nerdist interview.

As long as the joke is funny. There are a number of comics I can’t stand because they are offensive just to be offensive, rather than to actually be funny. I think Lisa Lampanelli is terrible, for example.

I never liked Lisa. Her whole shtick was like, “I can make racist jokes because I sleep with black men.” Making it effectively another version of “I have lots of black friends.”

Joan Rivers’ humor worked because she was self deprecating. Same with Don Rickles. A lot of people who tell offensive jokes are too up tight to make fun of themselves in the same way they make fun of others - in which case it’s not really a joke, it’s just an insult.

Contrary to popular belief, one can enjoy Joan Rivers without being a middle-aged gay dude. That old broad was hilarious.
